In 2008 Merck, a global pharmaceutical and chemicals company with over 30 000 employees world-wide, acquired the Umeå company SeQuant.
SeQuant has unique technology and expertise in certain chromatographic applications. Merck chose to retain the organisation in Umeå.
Umeå is home to two universities and a university hospital, with a total of 32 000 students and 3000 researchers.
